What should good home care look like?

A plain-English guide to person-centred home care, dignity, safety, responsiveness and good communication for families in South Yorkshire.

Updated 29 September 2026

When families compare home-care services, it can help to use the same broad principles that underpin quality regulation in England.

Person-centred

Care should reflect the person’s needs, preferences and choices rather than treating everyone the same.

Dignity and respect

Privacy, respectful communication and involvement in decisions are basic expectations of good care.

Safe and responsive

A good service should have clear systems for medication where applicable, safeguarding, staff training, managing changes in need and responding when something is not right.

Well-led

Families should feel able to ask questions and raise concerns. Good communication, reliable records and clear accountability are all positive signs.
